Fountains & Urns

The smallest way to get water into a garden. A basalt column, a bubbling urn or a spillway bowl over a hidden reservoir — no open water, very little space, and it can be running the same week.

What forms are there?

Bubbling urns, where water rises and spills over a glazed or stone vessel. Basalt columns, usually set in threes at different heights. Spillway bowls and walls, where water falls in a sheet into the reservoir below.

All of them sit over an in-ground reservoir, so there is no standing water and nothing exposed for a child to fall into.

Will it bring birds?

Yes, and it is worth designing for. A shallow lip and a rough surface give birds somewhere to land and drink. Small changes at the design stage make the difference between a feature birds use and one they ignore.

Where can one go?

Courtyards, patios, entryways, balconies and small city gardens. The reservoir needs excavation, but the footprint is small enough that most sites work.

Fountains & Urns we’ve built

Our background is water treatment.

Before ponds, our work was wastewater treatment, industrial aquaculture and aquariums. All three come down to keeping a closed body of water healthy, and that decides whether a pond is still clear in its third summer. So we plan the filtration, planting and circulation before we dig, and we test the water before we treat it.

“They did a beautiful job designing our backyard! The team is very friendly and kept the project on time. I would highly recommend them.”
