Formal Water Features

Water treated as architecture. Straight edges, level surfaces and controlled spill — features that sit with a building rather than imitating nature.

What makes a formal feature different?

Nature hides imperfection; formal work exposes it. A naturalistic pond edge can absorb a few millimetres of variation and nobody sees it. A straight stone lip cannot — the water shows you immediately.

That means the tolerances are tighter and the setting-out matters more. It is a different discipline from the same trade.

Does it still need biology?

Yes, and this is where formal features usually fail. A rectangle of still water with no ecological support turns green quickly, and the owner ends up dosing it forever.

The filtration is designed in from the start and hidden, so the feature reads as clean architecture while behaving like a healthy body of water.

Can it be built to a specific space?

That is usually the point. Formal work is nearly always bespoke — sized to a courtyard, a terrace, an entry or a particular sight line from inside the house.

Formal Water Features we’ve built

Our background is water treatment.

Before ponds, our work was wastewater treatment, industrial aquaculture and aquariums. All three come down to keeping a closed body of water healthy, and that decides whether a pond is still clear in its third summer. So we plan the filtration, planting and circulation before we dig, and we test the water before we treat it.

“We have done a lot of renovation and landscaping over the years, and Mike is hands down the best we have ever worked with. The end product, a water feature and custom fire pit, are absolutely beautiful and we are proud to show them off.”
